Today, the company announced its latest Android OS Android 7.1 via their developer blog and also listed the Nexus devices that will get the Nougat 7.1 update as well as the devices getting the Nougat 7.1 Developer preview this month. The developer preview will be available on Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and Pixel C device this month followed by other supported devices by the end of the preview.
The devices to get the Nougat 7.1 update includes Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, Asus Nexus Player, Pixel C and supported Android One devices. The final release of this Android version will be available in early December as per Google official blog post. So, if you want to receive the Developer Preview on your device, make sure you have joined the Android Beta program.
The Android Nougat 7.1 update comes with variety of optimizations and bug fixes, features, and new APIs. The developers can get new features such as App shortcuts API that lets the developers surface key actions directly in the launcher and take your users deep into your app instantly, Circular app icons support feature that allows developers to provide great-looking rounded icon resources that match the look of Pixel and other launchers, and enhanced live wallpaper metadata that lets you provide metadata about your live wallpapers to any picker displaying the wallpapers as a preview.
Other developer features includes Image keyboard support and Storage manager Intent feature. The Image keyboard support feature expands the types of content that users can enter from their keyboards, letting them express themselves through custom stickers, animated gifs, and more. The Storage manager Intent feature lets an app take the user directly to a new Settings screen to clear unused files and free up storage space on the device. For carriers and calling apps, new APIs will support multi-endpoint calling and new telephony configuration options.
