Ubuntu running Meizu PRO 5 to launch on February 22 at MWC 2016

We already witnessed the Chinese smartphone company Meizu’s latest flagship Meizu Pro 5 launch last year in September. The company is already rumored to be working on a mini variant of the PRO 5 to be called as Pro 5 Mini, but looks the company is also working on an Ubuntu version of the Pro 5 that is going to release at the MWC 2016 event of Meizu which is now scheduled for February 22nd at Barcelona. Meizu has posted some new teaser on its weibo account confirming the launch of a Ubuntu phone on February 22.

Meizu has posted a teaser on weibo with ‘Love Ubuntu’ text followed by the ‘MWC 2016’ and event date February 22. The second teaser was shared by Ubuntu China itself on weibo with Meizu, MWC 2016 and Feb 22 event date text. This clearly indicates that both the companies are going to launch an Ubuntu based smartphone and the rumors have suggested in past that it will be the Meizu Pro 5 running Ubuntu OS.

An image of the Meizu Pro 5 running Ubuntu OS was leaked recently in the white color variant. The Meizu Pro 5 was launched with Samsung’s Exynos 7420 processor and was the first non-Samsung phone running a Exynos processor. The Meizu Pro 5 specs includes a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution, 2.5D glass, Corning Gorilla Glass 3 Protection and 88-degree viewing angle.

Meizu Pro 5 is powered by an octa-core ( Quad 2.1GHz + Quad 1.5GHz) Samsung Exynos 7420 processor with Mali T760 GPU. It comes with two varaints 3GB LPDDR4 RAM with 32GB storage and 4GB LPDDR4 RAM with 64GB storage. The storage is further expandable via microSD card slot. It runs on Android 5.1 based Flyme OS 5.0. It supports Hybrid Dual SIM. It features a 21.6-megapixel rear camera with dual tone LED Flash, Laser Auto focus, PDAF, Sony IMX230 Exmor RS BSI sensor, 6P lenses, f/2.2 aperture and 4K video recording.

It also has a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with OV5670 sensor and f/2.0 aperture. It comes with a 3050mAh battery and also has a fingerprint scanner available on home button. Connectivity options includes 4G LTE, 3G HSPA+ , WiFi 802.11 ac/b/g/n (2.4/5 GHz), Bluetooth 4.1, GPS and USB 3.0 Type-C. It measures 156.7 x 78 x 7.5mm and weights 166 grams. It is available in Gray, Silver, Silver Black and Golden color options.
